Primitive sumba wood cloth pounder on stand | Dewi
Primitive sumba wood cloth pounder on stand | Dewi
Dating from over 80 years ago, each board was hand-carved, and each is unique.
The lovely 'Kabiro' boards originate from the textile island of Sumba, Indonesia.
The head of each board acts as a handle, and this paddle is used for beating and pounding cotton in order to facilitate the making of cotton threads. The cotton would have been used to make batik artworks.
Each beater is made from a single piece of hardwood, and each unique item has a fabulous patina.
A piece of textile history with a wonderful form and a deep sense of heritage.
These can be polished and waxed to a high sheen using wax or oil. We have left them just as they are, as we love the time-worn aesthetic.
